Decades-long effort by abortion opponents led court to edge of Roe v. Wade revision.

On the time Roe was determined in 1973, abortion was removed from a partisan concern. As California’s governor, Reagan had signed a 1967 regulation allowing abortion, and Sen. Thomas Eagleton (D-Mo.), the primary vice-presidential nominee on the Democrat’s 1972 ticket, was generally known as a distinguished abortion opponent. Even President Biden, as a U.S. senator from Delaware, voted in 1982 for a constitutional modification to let states outlaw abortion.
