Israel and Hamas agreed to free 50 civilian hostages held by militants in Gaza in return for the discharge of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails and a pause in preventing.

The Israeli cupboard authorised the deal after an extended deliberation that began Tuesday and went into the early morning hours of Wednesday in Jerusalem. It capped weeks of painstaking negotiations brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the U.S., marking the primary main diplomatic breakthrough because the struggle started on Oct. 7. Hamas confirmed the deal in an announcement.
